Articulate Accessible Exercise Considerations: (Part 1 of 4)

In order to develop an accessible exercise you will need to complete these steps:

  1. Open the current “Try Scene”
  2. Use the hide icon to hide layers such as hotspot and hint caption
  3. Select the preview option titled:  This Scene
  4. For each step capture a screen shot

Instructions for accessible tool users will be different from non-accessible tool users.

For example:  Non-accessible tool users will receive mouse based instructions.

“Click the expand link”.

An animation will play for the user to convey the following non-verbal message:

By pressing enter an expanded view of additional content will be available.

Accessible tool users will receive keyboard based instructions.

Accessible tool users often will not receive enough information to interpret non-verbal messages provided by on screen animations.

Below is an example of a descriptive message for accessible tool users.

You have selected the Administration document.

By pressing enter an expanded view of additional content will be available.

Press the enter key to activate an expanded view of the content.


Articulate Accessible Exercise Considerations: (Part 3 of 4)

Be sure to include:

  1. Tab based navigation
  2. Reduced tab navigation by removing ALT Tags from non-educational elements.
  3. Descriptive ALT Tags with focus on using keyboard based instructions
  4. Step Numbers
  5. Interactive Component – Tab to read on screen content, tab to continue to next step.  Next step is enabled by using the “Enter” key to continue.

Tabbing Order

In order to maintain a tabbing order you will need to hide tab objects off screen to the right.  First object above, next object below and so on for each screen.  The reason for this is that Leslie McKerchie – Articulate Staff ”Custom tab order is not currently a feature in Storyline 2”.  The tabbing order function is now available as of May 2015.
